Victorias Quilts Canada would like to extend a very warm welcome to our two newest branches, in Drumheller and Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. The Drumheller branch will work out of the local quilt store "Bits and Pieces" under the capable direction of Anne Riley. Anne is a quilter, and also the chaplain at the local Drumheller mens correctional facility, where several men will be sewing quilt tops, fulfilling the mandate for "meaningful recreation". Other members include women from the town and surrounding area. This collaboration is a win-win solution for all of us and the men especially are enthusiastic about taking part in this project. The new branch in Rocky Mountain House has barely been started, but they have already made several quilts. The enthusiastic group of seven quilters, under the direction of Florence Bott, will meet once a month during the summer, and twice a month starting in the fall. And our Calgary Branch has been hard at work producing spectacular quilts. Photos are in our new photo gallery (Click on any image for a larger version) With more branches being opened in communities across Canada, the number of quilts made and distributed within that community will also increase. And the funds that would have been spent on mailing the quilts from the National Office or another branch can be redirected into producing more quilts. Congratulations, and welcome, to Drumheller and Rocky Mountain House branches. And Calgary, keep up the good work! Top
The many hours that Victorias Quilts Canadas volunteers spent during the year in fundraising efforts have paid off! Betty Giffin, Victorias Quilts Canadas Founder, was pleased to discover that her locks of hair were worth more on the floor than on her head! Bettys head was shaved in April 2008 at the Annual General Meeting, and brought in $3200. Scroll down to the Archives to see Bettys before and after photos. The Fashion Show, presented by Talbots of Bayshore in early November 2008, brought in a very respectable $2200, together with the proceeds from the silent auction. Scroll down and visit the Photos page to see photos of their fall/winter fashions. And our three raffle quilts raised over $5800! From the photos of the winners, its obvious they are pleased with their new treasures. A new raffle will be held in 2009, so check back often for details. Top
Victorias Quilts Canada was very pleased to host its annual fashion show and silent auction on Saturday, November 1 at Barrhaven United Church in Nepean. Talbots at Bayshore presented an impressive line-up of their classic fall fashions. Attendees agreed they enjoyed themselves immensely as they viewed the exquisite fashions and had the opportunity to feel the fabrics. At the same time, audience members were able to bid on a silent auction comprising works of art, totes, and gift items. Together with the proceeds from the silent auction, over $2200 was raised. A special thank you to Talbots in Bayshore for their support in presenting their fashions. Another fashion show is planned for 2009, so check back often for details.

How many quilts can 135 people make in one day? The answer, simply, is many, as in more than 125. Our hard work (and lots of fun) means that at least another 125 people diagnosed with cancer in Canada will receive one of our quilts. The quilts bring with them a sense of peace and a feeling that people care. These feelings are very important to someone who is struggling with the fear and pain of cancer. Our sincere thanks go out to our dedicated volunteers, who worked their way through cutting, ironing, sewing and quilting. And thank you to all the people who helped organize Saturdays event; and to our many corporate sponsors without whose support our ongoing work would not be possible. 2008 Photos

TopBetty Bares All! - April 2008
In an effort to raise more funds for our important work, Betty Giffin, President, had her head shaved on Saturday, April 19, 2008, at the annual general meeting of Victoria"s Quilts Canada. "My hair was already short, so a few more inches was a small price to pay for the goal of raising more funds," said Betty. "People with cancer need to know that they are not alone in their struggle. The quilts help provide them comfort, both physical and spiritual." Although Betty"s hair may be gone, Victoria"s Quilts Canada is continuing to accept pledges until May 31. Please call in your pledges and send in your cheques to push Betty over her goal of $5,000. All funds collected will be used to continue Victoria"s Quilts Canada"s mission of providing hand-made quilts to people with cancer across Canada. Congratulations to... us! For again hosting a very successful Quilt-a-Thon on Saturday, October 20 at the Orleans United Church. About 100 people joined forces for a day of fun, laughter, companionship and hard work to make about 110 quilts that will be distributed at no charge to individuals diagnosed with cancer across the country. The quilts bring with them a sense of peace and a feeling that people care. These feelings are very important to someone who is struggling with the fear and pain of cancer. Our sincere thanks go out to our dedicated volunteers, who worked their way through cutting, ironing, sewing and quilting. Some of our participants traveled a distance to join us, and others were struck with personal tragedies on the day, but nevertheless came to join in.
