Radio-Telethon a Resounding Success!

June 2010

Thanks to Rabbi Reuven Bulka, of the Congregation Machzikei Hadas in Ottawa, for dedicating his radio program on June 6, 2010 to raise funds for Victoria’s Quilts Canada. We are thrilled that more than $6,000 was raised, which means another 175 people will receive quilts they may otherwise not have received. Listeners heard from a number of people about the positive effects that receiving a quilt had on them, and, from an individual who delivers quilts, about the gratifying sense of spirit she has seen among people she has visited. Victoria’s Quilts Canada greatly appreciates Rabbi Bulka’s participation in the fundraiser. And we offer a big Thank You as well to Steve Madely, host of CFRA’s The Madely Files, who co-chaired the telethon. As well, we would like to thank the Congretation Machzikei Hadas in Ottawa for their assistance and for the use of their facility. Rabbi Bulka’s radio program, Sunday Night with Rabbi Bulka, airs from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. on 580 CFRA.

Grants Received

November 2009

While most of our funding comes from private donations, often from the friends and family of quilt recipients, we were very pleased to receive three grants this year.

As they have done for many years, Fabricland Distributors gave us a grant for $10,000. While we are fortunate to receive donations of cotton fabric to make the quilt tops, we must usually purchase the flanellette and batting for the middle and bottom layers, as well as other required supplies. Fabricland's generous gift will help us with these required purchases.

Maxwell House and Kraft Canada Inc. ran a competition during 2008 and early 2009, entitled Brew Some Good, and invited nominations from charitable organizations that strive to improve the wellbeing of their communities. We were very pleased to be chosen as one of Canada's "Brew Good-ers". The $10,000 cheque has been put to good use in purchasing the supplies required to make more quilts. We estimate that an additional 400 quilts will be produced as a result of receiving this very generous gift.

Cheque presentation
Heather Hannaford, Deborah Wood and Kathy Yach
And, we were also very pleased to receive a grant from the Canadian Million Dollar Table Foundation in the amount of $1,611.65. Deborah Wood of Toronto nominated Victoria's Quilts Canada and presented the cheque to Kathy Yach and Heather Hannaford in November.

The Canadian Million Dollar Round Table Foundation awards grants annually to a variety of charities in communities across Canada. Funded by top life insurance professionals, the Foundation awards up to $5,000 per request to worthy charitable projects recommended by Foundation members.

To all of the granting organizations, we offer a very sincere Thank you. Without the support of such generous corporate donors, we would not be able to continue to satisfy the demand for our quilts.

2009 Fashion Show

November 2009

We were ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the gorgeous fashions presented at our annual fashion show by Joanne's of Westgate Mall. The show was held on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Barrhaven United Church in Nepean. This year's show was a great success, MC'd by Joanne, herself, and the fashions were modeled by several fearless models, who were "volun-told" from the ranks of our volunteers. Besides being treated to coffee/tea and dessert, our 75 guests were also able to bid on art and gift items at the silent auction. All together, the event raised about $1,000, which will help us continue our work.

A special thank you to Joanne's of Westgate Mall for their support in presenting their fashions. Another fashion show is planned for 2010, so check back often for details.

2009 Quilt-a-Thon

October 2009

In answer to your questions, the answer is -- 136! That's the number of quilts that 107 people made in one day, on Saturday October 17, 2009, at the Orleans United Church in Orleans. And, together with the 31 quilts that were dropped off during the day, our shelves were stocked with a total of 167 new quilts that were available for distribution.

Our 107 volunteers worked hard (and laughed even harder) through cutting, ironing, sewing and quilting. We offer our sincere thanks to them all, and to all the people who helped organize the event. We'd also like to thank our many corporate sponsors, without whose support our ongoing work would not be possible.

Stay tuned for information on the 2010 Quilt-a-Thon!

Welcome to Harrowsmith Branch in Godfrey, Ontario

September 2009

A very warm welcome to Harrowsmith Branch, in Godfrey, Ontario. The 11 member group will be led by Laurie Scala, who has been sewing for more than 35 years, and who was previously a member of our Bolingbroke Branch. Laurie approached the owner of the local quilt shop, Wilton Fabrics in Harrowsmith, who very enthusiastically offered space and equipment for the group to meet, pin, sew, and store their supplies. The branch members, who have been meeting since last summer, have extensive sewing and quilting experience. The branch has started fundraising and plans to advertise in the local community paper. No doubt, both activities will increase their visibility in the community at large, and will encourage more people to join the group.

Once again, our congratulations to VQC's 23rd branch!

Quilt-a-Thon 2009

July 2009

Our annual Quilt-A-Thon was held on October 17, 2009 at the Orleans United Church, 1111 Orleans Boulevard, in Orleans, Ontario. If you’ve attended in the past, you know you’ll share friendship, compassion, and a few laughs as we work to make even more than the 130 quilts we made last year. And, if you haven’t attended in the past, please join us – we’d love to see you, and make your acquaintance. A $12 registration fee will help cover the costs of purchasing quilting supplies for the event and providing a yummy lunch. Places are limited, and will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. We look forward to seeing you there! And please let us know if you (or a muscular honey) can help with setting up the room on the Friday evening or dismantling the room on the Saturday, after 4:00 p.m.

Our Newest Branches

June 2009

Victoria’s Quilts Canada would like to extend a very warm welcome to our two newest branches, in Drumheller and Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

The Drumheller branch will work out of the local quilt store "Bits and Pieces" under the capable direction of Anne Riley. Anne is a quilter, and also the chaplain at the local Drumheller men’s correctional facility, where several men will be sewing quilt tops, fulfilling the mandate for "meaningful recreation". Other members include women from the town and surrounding area. This collaboration is a win-win solution for all of us and the men especially are enthusiastic about taking part in this project.

The new branch in Rocky Mountain House has barely been started, but they have already made several quilts. The enthusiastic group of seven quilters, under the direction of Florence Bott, will meet once a month during the summer, and twice a month starting in the fall.

And our Calgary Branch has been hard at work producing spectacular quilts. Photos are in our new photo gallery (Click on any image for a larger version)

With more branches being opened in communities across Canada, the number of quilts made and distributed within that community will also increase. And the funds that would have been spent on mailing the quilts from the National Office or another branch can be redirected into producing more quilts.

Congratulations, and welcome, to Drumheller and Rocky Mountain House branches. And Calgary, keep up the good work!

Fundraising Pays!

December 2008

The many hours that Victoria’s Quilts Canada’s volunteers spent during the year in fundraising efforts have paid off!

Betty Giffin, Victoria’s Quilts Canada’s Founder, was pleased to discover that her locks of hair were worth more on the floor than on her head! Betty’s head was shaved in April 2008 at the Annual General Meeting, and brought in $3200. Scroll down to the Archives to see Betty’s before and after photos.

The Fashion Show, presented by Talbot’s of Bayshore in early November 2008, brought in a very respectable $2200, together with the proceeds from the silent auction. Scroll down and visit the Photos page to see photos of their fall/winter fashions.

And our three raffle quilts raised over $5800! From the photos of the winners, it’s obvious they are pleased with their new treasures. A new raffle will be held in 2009, so check back often for details.

Quilt-a-Thon 2008

October 2008

How many quilts can 135 people make in one day? The answer, simply, is “many”, as in more than 125. Our hard work (and lots of fun) means that at least another 125 people diagnosed with cancer in Canada will receive one of our quilts. The quilts bring with them a sense of peace and a feeling that people care. These feelings are very important to someone who is struggling with the fear and pain of cancer. Our sincere thanks go out to our dedicated volunteers, who worked their way through cutting, ironing, sewing and quilting. And thank you to all the people who helped organize Saturday’s event; and to our many corporate sponsors without whose support our ongoing work would not be possible.

Raffle Winners 2008

Françoise Poirier of Ottawa took home the first prize quilt, Eureka!, a queen-size bed quilt in cheerful tones of yellow and gold, punctuated with shades of blue. The quilt was pieced by Betty Giffin, quilted by Cherry Tree Quilts, and bound by Dianne Dooley. It has been appraised at $1,795.

Françoise has been retired for 1 ½ years, but keeps busy making quilts, directing bus tours, golfing and gardening. And, she is also an interior designer.

1st prize
Second prize, Garland of Dreams, was won by Jeanne Marceau-Joyal. Jeanne retired from teaching a few years ago, and is currently an in-home care-giver. That leaves little time for her interests: knitting, sewing, playing bridge, reading, and getting together with her sisters and friends. She also volunteers, tutoring children in school and at home.

Garland of Dreams is an antique queen-size bed quilt. Stunning yellow flowers with green stems are hand- appliquéd in a garland motif on a white background, with a scalloped border. The quilt was donated by Verla Hoffman of Ottawa, and made by her sister-in-law. The quilting was all done by hand. This quilt has been appraised at $1,195.

2nd prize
Irene Lafleche won the third prize quilt, Don’t Bug Me!, a whimsical reminder of days gone by, when children would spend summer days catching all kinds of bugs in glass jars! This quilt, made by a member of Victoria’s Quilts Canada, was appraised at $315.
3rd prize
Irene lives in Kingston, and the picture proves she is thrilled with her win!

3rd prize

Victoria’s Quilts Canada would like to sincerely thank all the people who purchased tickets; the volunteers who sold tickets, both publicly and privately; and the people and organizations who allowed us to sell tickets from their locations.

This year’s raffle raised over $5,800, which will help us continue providing physical and spiritual comfort to people with cancer in Canada -- one quilt at a time!

We will be holding a raffle in 2009, so please visit again to get the details and make sure you get your tickets.

Again, congratulations to Françoise Poirier, Jeanne Marceau-Joyal, and Irene Lafleche.

Betty Bares All! - April 2008

Betty Before
Before
Betty After
After

In an effort to raise more funds for our important work, Betty Giffin, President, had her head shaved on Saturday, April 19, 2008, at the annual general meeting of Victoria"s Quilts Canada.

"My hair was already short, so a few more inches was a small price to pay for the goal of raising more funds," said Betty. "People with cancer need to know that they are not alone in their struggle. The quilts help provide them comfort, both physical and spiritual."

Although Betty"s hair may be gone, Victoria"s Quilts Canada is continuing to accept pledges until May 31. Please call in your pledges and send in your cheques to push Betty over her goal of $5,000. All funds collected will be used to continue Victoria"s Quilts Canada"s mission of providing hand-made quilts to people with cancer across Canada.

Quilt-a-thon Quiltathon Quiltathon

Congratulations to... us! For again hosting a very successful Quilt-a-Thon on Saturday, October 20 at the Orleans United Church. About 100 people joined forces for a day of fun, laughter, companionship and hard work to make about 110 quilts that will be distributed at no charge to individuals diagnosed with cancer across the country. The quilts bring with them a sense of peace and a feeling that people care. These feelings are very important to someone who is struggling with the fear and pain of cancer. Our sincere thanks go out to our dedicated volunteers, who worked their way through cutting, ironing, sewing and quilting. Some of our participants traveled a distance to join us, and others were struck with personal tragedies on the day, but nevertheless came to join in. And thank you to all the people who helped organize Saturday's event; and to our many corporate sponsors without whose support our ongoing work would not be possible.
