Volunteer

VQC member sewing quilt layers togetherOur small volunteer base of twelve in 1999 has blossomed to an army of more than 1,300 people in 18 groups in the Ottawa area and in 25 other Branches across Canada. We have amazing volunteers who enrich our organization with a multitude of talents – not all of them sewing-related.

You can join a group that already exists in the Ottawa area or one of our Branches across the country. Or, you can start your own group in Ottawa or your own community. You can also volunteer for a non-sewing position. Whatever your preference, please contact us by e-mail or phone (613) 843-9212.

Victoria's Quilts Canada gives you the opportunity to make quilts in a group setting similar to the old fashioned quilting bees. Groups usually meet once a month, or more frequently if the members wish to work on quilts in a friendly, social atmosphere.

We use the team approach, where several people work on a single top, allowing them to complete it quickly. We have determined that four people working on one top can complete it in about two and a half hours. In some groups, this top is then taken home to be machine or hand quilted and bound by one of the members. Each group works slightly differently as determined by the coordinator, along with the help of the group.

You do not need to be an "expert" quilter to participate in our quilt-making program. Although we do not teach quilting, you will learn a great deal by working with other quilters. If you are an experienced quilter, you will learn new techniques and tricks. If you are a novice, you will learn the basics by participating and observing others at work.
